School Profile

Mount Pleasant Area Junior-Senior High School is a combined junior high (grades 7–8) and comprehensive high school (grades 9–12), serving approximately 950 students. Nestled in the scenic Laurel Highlands and located about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, our campus has been a cornerstone of the community since its founding in 1965, when Mount Pleasant Township Hurst and Mount Pleasant Ramsay High Schools merged.

Our school is supported by a dedicated team of three administrators and three school counselors, along with approximately 60 classroom teachers—more than half of whom have a decade or more of professional experience. An additional 25 support staff members—including clerical, custodial, food service, and technical roles—bring our total staff to nearly 100.

We follow a traditional nine-period daily schedule, with 40-minute classes and four-minute passing times. An A/B rotation allows for a wide variety of elective courses, and our day concludes with a 25-minute activity period. This time provides valuable opportunities for enrichment, remediation, and student engagement in extracurricular activities, while also allowing our professional staff time for collaboration.

Mount Pleasant Area Junior-Senior High School is proud of its long-standing tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, the arts, and technical education. We are consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Best High School. Recent honors also include recognition from GenCon for Financial Literacy, and Common Sense Media certification for Digital Citizenship. Additionally, the Mount Pleasant Area School District is recognized annually by the NAMM Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education.

Our students excel in a wide range of academic and competitive events, including BotsIQ, SkillsUSA, PMEA District 1 Band, Quiz League, and Mock Trial. Viking athletics has earned state-level recognition, with recent PIAA state championships in softball (2017, 2021), boys swimming (2025), and girls swimming (2023, 2024, 2025), along with individual state champions in wrestling, swimming, and track & field.

A culture of pride, respect, and high expectations supports our academic achievements. Over 80% of our graduates pursue post-secondary education at colleges or universities each year.

At Mount Pleasant Area Junior-Senior High School, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to reach their fullest potential in a structured, supportive environment. Our mission is to inspire logical, creative, and effective thinking that empowers students to grow as individuals, serve their community, and positively impact society.
